Father of Bride Toasts – Win them with your Words

Toasts are an important and expected part of any wedding festivity; and father of bride toasts just may be the most valued and anticipated toasts of all.

As father of the bride, you are a dignified and respected figure, in the eyes of both your family and your close friends; most of whom likely will be in attendance at your daughter’s wedding.  You want to deliver a winning toast that will make your family proud; and that, even more important, will make your daughter glad that she asked you to speak at her reception.

You want your father of the bride toast to be articulate and meaningful, conveying your endless love and greatest devotion for your precious little girl.  You want, moreover, to give her words of advice that will carry her into her married life, guiding and advising her.  This is your one chance to capture and embody the significance of this most auspicious occasion; and to express your adoration for the special young woman who inspired it.

At the same time, please remember that a toast is not a speech in the most traditional sense.  It is shorter and lighter than a traditional oratory, and is often imbued with hearty doses of both warmth and humor.  People should remember your toast, not only for its deep meaning, but for its snazzy, snappy style.

Coming up with a toast that strikes this difficult balance is a daunting task, to be sure; all the same, it should be a task that comes naturally to you as a father.  Aren’t you usually the funniest one at the dinner table at home?  And aren’t you, along with your dear wife of course, the one who dispenses advice and directives to your admiring, respectful children?  Of everyone in your family, you are perhaps the one best qualified to give a winning wedding toast.

When I made my father of the bride speech, I only concentrated on making my daughter feel proud. I didn’t really think of anyone else. If there were other people to consider, it could be my family in general. My mistake was forgetting to thank the family of the groom. I never mentioned them during my speech and it was quite a mess. I don’t like the groom’s family to feel like I disregarded them or anything offensive. It’s not bad at all but I feel guilty of not mentioning them even just for once. I’m glad my wife had to mention them at least when it’s her turn.
